Come to this informative session designed to introduce people who can be helpful to you as you manage your health needs and health insurance questions. There will be a quick introduction of the panel members and the BMC grad health insurance website, and then a free forum for discussion and questions.

Dr. Kay Kerr and Sally Heimann from the BMC Health Center, Lea Miller from Student Administrative Support, and Patti Lausch from the International Programs Office will be joining us.

Connecting Students with Students (Graduate Connections Event)

Undergrad students and graduate students will have the opportunity to sit down together to talk about academic/college life, undergraduate experiences and any other questions or concerns on undergraduates’ minds. Topics that may be covered (if there is interest) include: the importance of time management and organization, successful study skills that have worked for us as graduate students, how to build relationships with professors for future contacts/support, the importance of building a resume with internships and other summer opportunities, etc.

We want to emphasize that this is NOT academic advisement or mentoring – for these types of guidance, talk to academic advisors and/or deans! We simply want to offer a time for undergrads to sit down with grads to share “student experiences”, what has worked best for us as students and lessons we’ve learned across the years.

Beyond Bryn Mawr: Funding Your Research

Listen up GSAS students – getting external funding for your research is always a good thing! And Dr. Nona Smith, Director of Sponsored Research, has you covered. Dr. Smith recently spoke to students about the value of finding external grants and fellowships as part of the GSA’s Professional Development Speaker Series, and presented strategies for getting that funding. Whether you’re just beginning your search, or need someone to read over your proposal, Dr. Smith said that her office is available to help.

Graduate Students Give Tips on Making the Most of Grad Visits

Bryn Mawr College undergraduates recently got tips and suggestions on what to consider when visiting a graduate program. As part of the Graduate Connections program, GSAS students Ryan Fealy, Tina Morgan-Ross, Steven Karacic, and Laura Surtees answered questions from about a dozen students on things to keep in mind when selecting a graduate program.

Grab your cummerbund, it’s time for the Winter Formal

The annual GSA Winter Formal is this Friday from 7:30 to 11:00 PM in the Dorthy Vernon Room. In Steve K.’s words,

The event will include an open bar, snacks, music, and a gingerbread house competition. The competition will begin at 9 pm, when those in attendance will divide into four teams to construct their houses. For the competition, the GSAS will provide gingerbread, frosting, candy, and a prize to the winning house. If you would like to bring additional candy for the decoration of your house you are free to do so. Please keep in mind that all parts of the gingerbread houses MUST be edible.

This will almost certainly be an amazing time, so if you’re still on the fence about going, cancel your Friday night plans now and grab a ticket ($5) from Steve K., Don F., or Lindsey D.

Due to fading light and colder weather, the weekly intramural soccer games have moved indoors for the winter. We have a diverse group that play each week, including grad students, undergrad students, and faculty. As part of the Professional Development Workshop series, the GSA and Genny Dunne from the Career Development Office are presenting the first workshop of the year on CV writing. “What does your CV say about you?” will outline the general principles/guidelines of CV writing and tips on how to make your CV attractive to prospect employers. Feel free to bring your CV with you as a guideline.

The workshop “What does your CV say about you?” will be held on November 12, 2010 at 12pm in Taylor Classroom C. Feel free to bring your lunch and join us for the workshop.

This Fall, the GSAS will be expressing its gratefulness to all of the amazing alumni/ae that have donated to help make fellowships and other opportunities available to graduate students at Bryn Mawr College.
